Random eavesdropping

This week, while walking to class, I've heard a lot of little conversations that seem completely random because I have no context for them. Here were the best two from this week...

(Between two girls walking to class)
"I don't think she really understands what we're talking about..."
"Yeah, I know, and she snores really loud, too!"

(Between two guys outside the library)
"Hey, dude did you study abroad last year?"
"Yeah, man I went to Peru! I ate guinea pig, man, you know that!"

Three updates in one day, pretty good, I think :P

If you're bored and you know it, clap your hands...

I stole this survey (including the title) from some random blog. So, thanks to whoever she is! :)

1. Where were you 1 hour ago?
Here, checking my email and facebook.

2. Who will be your next kiss?
Who knows? But that's the mystery in life, right?

3. Is there anything pink within 10 feet of you?
I don't think so, this room isn't very bright, but it is mostly white and shades of gray.

4. When is the last time you went to the mall?
Yesterday.

5. Are you wearing socks right now?
Yes.

6. When was the last time you went out of town?
Today to go into Bangor to get bagels and "study" with Nissa.

7. Have you been to the movies in the last 5 days?
No, but I have plenty of ganas, I'll probably go on Thanksgiving break.

8. What was the last thing you had to drink?
Water.

9. What are you wearing right now?
Jeans, t-shirt and a hoodie. The American student uniform, you could say.

10. Have you been in a car wash?
Yes…hasn't everyone?

11. Last fast food you ate?
Green grapes.

12. Where were you last week on Saturday?
At home.

13. Have you bought any clothing items in the last week?
I bought a dress on sale yesterday.
14. When was the last time you ran?
I ran on the elliptical machine at the gym on Friday.

15. What's the last sporting event you watched?
A few minutes of baseball here and there, I guess.

16. Your Full initals?
ARM

17. Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment.
1. I wonder if it's true that if you're initials spell a word it means you'll have good luck.
2. I wonder if David Fonseca sang "Song to the Siren/Who are You?" at the concert in Oporto, I love that song.
3. I want to write more of my paper.

18. Last 3 people's houses you were in?
1. Mine
2. My grandparents'

3. My great-aunt's

19. How old are your parents?
Early-mid fifties.

20. What time did you wake up today?
I woke up at 6 and had a surprising amount of energy until about 11, then I recharged with a cup of coffee.

21. Do you miss anyone?
Of course I do. I dreamt that they were in Maine the other night. It was weird, but in a cool way.

22. Last play you saw?
Something last summer about a murder mystery that involved an opera singer. I didn't like it very much.

23. What are your plans for today?
Well, for me, today is pretty much over. I plan to write a little more and then read some of Blindness…I'm a little concerned for the characters, one of them has a gun now, and I'm nervous about how that might resolve. At least I don't dread going back to my room because I actually cleaned it today AND made the bed. Go me! Haha.

24. Who is the last person you commented on myspace?

No one, I don't have it.

25. Ever go to camp?
Yes, I went to an overnight camp (which I hated) and a day camp that focused on art, dance and music (loved it).

The end.

Urgent, open at once!

Querido Joana:

Abby

If you could get rid of anything in this world, what would it be? Why? I would get rid of fear (in all forms) because I think it’s the cause of most unhappiness in the world.

Should everyone be carnivores, omnivores, or herbivores? Why? Omnivores, that way people get enough protein and fiber and all that.

Would you ever make the world one race if you had the chance? No, because diversity is so important.

What is your ideal location? I have many. A small-medium cosmopolitan city with art museums and interesting people.

The last compliment you received? That I understood the ethics material for the test…I’m not sure that’s true though, haha.

Today, would you rather go back a week or go forward a week? Neither, just stay right where I am.
What are you looking forward to right now? Reading a chapter of Wicked and then going to bed early, I'm so tired.

A poem by Rainer Maria Rilke

Childhood

It would be good to give much thought, before
you try to find words for something so lost,
for those long childhood afternoons you knew
that vanished so completely -and why?

We're still reminded-: sometimes by a rain,
but we can no longer say what it means;
life was never again so filled with meeting,
with reunion and with passing on

as back then, when nothing happened to us
except what happens to things and creatures:
we lived their world as something human,
and became filled to the brim with figures.

And became as lonely as a sheperd
and as overburdened by vast distances,
and summoned and stirred as from far away,
and slowly, like a long new thread,
introduced into that picture-sequence
where now having to go on bewilders us.

Forward your MP3 player or media player while the shuffle is on and use the song titles to answer the following questions. “When we Were Young”

3.) What is my best friend's theme song?

Parte 2 (of 3)

Mi "reading corner." La bandera queda muy fixe, verdad? :)

Voy a hacer parte 2 ahora. Entonces...2 entries :/.

Crazy, Sexy, Cancer

Here's a clip from a documentary about a young woman who is diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer. She decides to take matters into her own hands and experiments with different types of treatment...eating whole foods, yoga, and various other types of therapy. She has an amazing outlook on life; very inspiring. The documentary is recommended to the one person that reads this blog :).

Unless I become best friends with Bill Gates, I will never work for Microsoft

Here are some example interview questions from an interview to work for Microsoft. I left out the more computer science-y ones as I do not understand their "lingo."

Applications

How can computer technology be integrated in an elevator system for a hundred story office building? How do you optimize for availability? How would variation of traffic over a typical work week or floor or time of day affect this?

How would you implement copy-protection on a control which can be embedded in a document and duplicated readily via the Internet?

Define a user interface for indenting selected text in a Word document. Consider selections ranging from a single sentence up through selections of several pages. Consider selections not currently visible or only partially visible. What are the states of the new UI controls? How will the user know what the controls are for and when to use them?

How would you redesign an ATM?

Suppose we wanted to run a microwave oven from the computer. What kind of software would you write to do this?

What is the difference between an Ethernet Address and an IP address?

How would you design a coffee-machine for an automobile.

If you could add any feature to Microsoft Word, what would it be?

How would you go about building a keyboard for 1-handed users?

How would you build an alarm clock for deaf people?

Thinkers

How are M&Ms made?

If you had a clock with lots of moving mechanical parts, you took it apart piece by piece without keeping track of the method of how it was disassembled, then you put it back together and discovered that 3 important parts were not included; how would you go about reassembling the clock?

If you had to learn a new computer language, how would you go about doing it?

You have been assigned to design Bill Gates bathroom. Naturally, cost is not a consideration. You may not speak to Bill.

What was the hardest question asked of you so far today?

If MS told you we were willing to invest $5 million in a start up of your choice, what business would you start? Why?

If you could gather all of the computer manufacturers in the world together into one room and then tell them one thing that they would be compelled to do, what would it be?

Explain a scenario for testing a salt shaker.

If you are going to receive an award in 5 years, what is it for and who is the audience?

How would you explain how to use Microsoft Excel to your grandma?

Why is it that when you turn on the hot water in any hotel, for example, the hot water comes pouring out almost instantaneously?

Why do you want to work at Microsoft?

Suppose you go home, enter your house/apartment, hit the light switch, and nothing happens - no light floods the room. What exactly, in order, are the steps you would take in determining what the problem was?

Interviewer hands you a black pen and says nothing but "This pen is red."

If you were to get drunk in a country where the drinking limit is under 21, and went to the states and were still over the limit, could they arrest you for underage drinking even though you did not do the drinking in the states. (That's a really good question :P)

Me aburro demasiado

5. What do you usually have for breakfast? Cereal with blueberries and milk.

9. What is your favourite chip flavour? Don't really like 'em.

13. What characteristics do you despise? Too many to list, but they all pretty much boil down to deceit and falseness.

14. Favourite item or outfit? My Brazilian wish bracelet, my bracelet from Lucia, earrings from Candi and purple headband from Jo. When I wore all of them on the same day, my cousin told me I looked like a gypsy. I took it as a compliment (and laughed because it reminded me of the costume party :P).

16. What color is your bathroom? Peach.

17. Favourite brand of clothing? This survey is way too easy...H&M!

21. Who do you least expect to send this back to you? Well, for starters I'm not really sending it...so no one?

22. Person you expect to send it back first? If anyone else out there ever reads this, it will most like be Jo as she is probably the only one who reads the blog :). If she does read it, I vote that she should copy it and answer all the questions on her blog.

27. How are you today? Well, the day started out fine, but has devolved into a bad mood.

28. What is a date on your calendar you are looking forward to? In the short term, tomorrow because I could be getting a postcard :). In the long term...March 2009.

Estoy enganchada...

I'm addicted to...
1. Vitamin Water. I love the little funny paragraphs on the label, the rainbow of different colors, and all of the nutrients.

2. Paralyzer by Finger 11. The video's kind of strange, but the song gets stuck in my head all the time...and I'm not complaining.

3. The cyclic nature of this poem by Mary Oliver:

The Buddha's Last Instruction

"Make of yourself a light"
said the Buddha,
before he died.
I think of this every morning
as the east begins
to tear off its many clouds
of darkness, to send up the first
signal-a white fan
streaked with pink and violet,
even green.
An old man, he lay down
between two sala trees,
and he might have said anything,
knowing it was his final hour.
The light burns upward,
it thickens and settles over the fields.
Around him, the villagers gathered
and stretched forward to listen.
Even before the sun itself
hangs, disattached, in the blue air,
I am touched everywhere
by its ocean of yellow waves.
No doubt he thought of everything
that had happened in his difficult life.
And then I feel the sun itself
as it blazes over the hills,
like a million flowers on fire-
clearly I'm not needed,
yet I feel myself turning
into something of inexplicable value.
Slowly, beneath the branches,
he raised his head.
He looked into the faces of that frightened crowd.

4. The movie Atonement. It was kind of disturbing, but I like the idea that one person's perspective and interpretation of certain events can have a real effect on others' lives.

5. Project Runway...but only when they have good challenges, like tonight's "make an outfit out of car parts." After all, this is the show that inspired #10 on my list.

I'm not so thrilled about...
1. Facebook. I hate it. I don't like knowing what everyone is up to all the time. I'm tempted to delete my account.

2. "Phoebe" on Friends. She annoys me so much...it's partly the voice and partly that she tries too much to be weird.

3. Strangely chilly late August Maine weather. It feels like fall already, which is ok, but I know that it's going to get inexplicably hot again in September. Grr....Maine weather.

That's all for now. 5 good things vs. 3 bad things are pretty good odds, I think :P.

I want to fly...

After seeing The Dark Knight I decided that Batman is not a real superhero because he has no actually super-human powers. He has a cool suit and a cool car, but little more. So, I was wondering, could anyone become their own version of a superhero?

How to Become a Superhero

This article outlines 10 relatively practical ways to become a superhero. Brandon would definitely go with #7, Joana already fits the description for #8. As for me, I think #5 and #9 look pretty good. #10 is only appealing on a really bad day. What do you think? Are superheros some kind of other species, or is it possible to evolve into one? If you could, what powers would you want?

Jo, you can already check #37 off your list

Well, I am really bored right now and am looking for something to do. After talking with a friend of mine about the 101 things in 1001 days list a couple of weeks ago, and just reading one I've decided to start one. I'm already participating in 43things.com but this seems cool, too. I'm thinking of so many things, but a lot of them are really abstract (like "have infinite patience") and clearly impossible (like..uh..."have infinite patience"). So, I'll try to keep this as concrete as I can. I'll admit, I'm completely stealing this idea from Joana, so I might as well take her start and end dates, too, since I'm too lazy to do my own. Start date is September 2nd, 2008 and the end date is May 31st, 2011. Here we go!

An American Girl with Wanderlust

Inspired by Joana, I have started this blog...I only hope that I have enough to say to keep posting and that my posts don't overlap too much with hers! :P

After spending a year in the most beautiful city in the world (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) I've learned so much about European life that is, for the most part, not widely known here in the US. So one of my goals will be to spread the news about great bands, movies, books, and generally cool ideas about language and culture that I picked up while away. I'll try to alternate between English and Spanish posts...I have no idea who (if anyone) will read this, but we'll give it a try and see how it goes.

Above is a photo of the cathedral in Santiago. It feels so strange not to walk by it every day. If you have any questions about the life/culture in Spain, feel free to comment on the blog. I'll do my best to come up with an answer.

Ok, that's all for right now. Bye!
